According to a recent Dayton.com article, Dayton restaurant Ugly Duckling this week announced it will move to a new location this spring. The eatery is relocating to a larger space at 1430 E 5th St, in Dayton’s St. Anne’s Hill Historic District. The Fifth Street location is approximately double the size of the eatery’s current space located at 115 Springfield St.

Chef and co-owner of the eatery Mason Schindler tells What Now Columbus that the anticipated timeline for opening is currently slated for spring. The current location on Springfield Street will close in late February, with the ownership shooting for an April reopening in the new neighborhood.

When it comes to the decor of the new space, Schindler said guests can expect the same classic diner style that they’re used to at the original eatery, as well as art work by local artists featured throughout the restaurant.

The restaurant is a collaboration among Schindler, who also owns Blazin’ Dayton Spice Co., as well as Dexter Clay, better known as “Uncle Boof,” who owns Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancake Mix with business partner Zach Jeckering.

With the larger space, the team will be able to expand the menu offerings and Schindler said over time, guests will see some past daily specials make their way to the menu permanently.

“We’ll definitely feature the honey chicken biscuit and we’re getting a waffle maker so we’ll offer chicken and waffles.”

Additionally, Schindler said guests have asked for gluten-free options and plans are in the works to offer a gluten-free items, including a gluten-free waffle option.

While the details are still unfolding, Schindler said they hope to be able to double the seating capacity at the new location and offer seating for approximately 50 to 60 guests.
