According to recent reporting, popular ice cream shop Double Happy will become Bumble’s Backyard. The new business will remain located at 1280 Brown Rd and will continue to serve ice cream, but the new concept will focus on a dog-friendly atmosphere that invites guests to stay for an hour or part of their day.

Bumble’s Backyard is the dream of Lauryn and Evan Betterton and is named after their pooch, Bumble. As anyone with a canine family member can attest, most dog parks don’t always have tables or chairs, so meeting up with friends to chat while the dogs play isn’t always easy. The idea behind the couple’s business is simple, create a dog-friendly experience designed with humans in mind by offering food, drinks and plenty of seating.

Although the Bettertons have already purchased and are now operating Double Happy, the name on the outside of the business won’t change until sometime after the ice cream season, likely this fall. This way, it gives the couple time to get to know the community through a series of Bumble’s Backyard pop up events planned this summer on the property’s greenspace.

Lauryn shared with What Now Columbus that although the business is centered around creating a dog-friendly environment, those without a pup are also welcome at the space.

“We’re committed to making it a place available for everyone in Columbus that celebrates the best that Columbus has to offer,” Lauryn Betteron said.

When ice cream season kicks off next spring, the business will be fully transitioned to Bumble’s Backyard, and customers will still find the two service windows Double Happy is known for, one for drive-thru service and one window for walk up service, as well as ice cream on the menu. The establishment will also continue to serve coffee, but Lauryn tells What Now Columbus that they’ll expand the offerings to include every type of drink you’d expect to find in a coffee shop. Additionally, there will be a craft beer selection available from various Columbus breweries as well as food options.

In addition to a few menu changes and a new name, part of the greenspace will get transformed into pup-friendly astroturf, also new will be a customer bathroom that’s accessible from outside. Other additions include TVs, sunsails, tables and seating available so groups can gather for morning coffee or afternoon beers while taking in a Buckeyes game.
