A new ice cream shop is coming to Columbus at 1288 W 5th Ave, according to a permit recently filed with the city. When it opens, The Grand Scoop will serve ice cream from Ohio’s oldest dairy, Toft Dairy, which is located in Sandusky. What Now Columbus spoke with owner Kevin Steidel and his business partner Zachary Wymer about the ice cream shop’s menu and expected opening date.
While ice cream is something that’s unbeatable in summer, for some ice cream fans, it’s never too cold for the delicious treat. Columbus ice cream lovers will be happy to learn that the shop plans to feature 24 scoop flavors throughout the year, with at least four of those flavors rotating about every month.
Guests can get their ice cream scooped into a cone or served up in a milkshake, sundae, blended with assorted goodies into a flurry or as the filling in a cookie sandwich. In addition to scoopable ice cream, the menu will also feature Dole Whip, a pineapple soft serve treat first made popular at Disney theme parks.
Some of the ice cream shop’s offerings are still coming together, but Steidel said there are plans to offer hot chocolate and a menu is being developed for a line of hot chocolate beverages (and assorted toppings) that pair well with ice cream.
Steidel and Wymer said they’re aiming for a late summer or early fall launch and could be open as soon as mid-September.
In addition to opening the ice cream shop, Steidel also owns 365 Midwest Concession, which has been selling Toft Dairy ice cream products for the past six years. It’s because of this established relationship with the dairy that Steidel said the final name of the shop may be Toft’s Grand Scoop.
