According to recent reporting, Sweet Dreams Cake Shoppe is moving to a new location at 121 Public Square in downtown Troy. The build out for the new location is currently underway and the bakery expects to be moved into the downtown location by late July, if all goes according to plan.
The cake shop is currently located at 50 S Dorset Rd and is owned by area baker Catherine McKenna Peoples, and her boyfriend, Johnny Rochester. Peoples shared with What Now Columbus that she decided to start her own brick and mortar 18 months ago, which was a decision that felt like a leap of faith, but one that has ultimately allowed her to do what she loves every day.
Peoples has been baking and selling cakes for about 20 years and before moving into the brick and mortar on Dorset Road, her previous business was based out of her home. That iteration of her business was called Night Kitchen Cakes, an homage to the fact that she baked cakes at night to balance being a mother of five and working a day job.
Peoples says she’s baked since childhood, but making specialty cakes all started once she baked a three-dimensional cake for her oldest daughter’s first birthday. After that she slowly started making cakes for friends and family out of her home. Although she worked day jobs while baking at night, she felt like baking full time was what she eventually wanted to do with her life, since it combined her baking experience and art skills she gained when she attended Columbus College of Art and Design.
Now it seems by moving into the downtown Troy location, everything is lining up for her business and it’s what Peoples describes as “a dream come true.” She shared that she’s had her eye on opening a bakery in the area for 10 years, it was just a matter of timing and having the funds to do so.
“I always envisioned my shop being in downtown Troy. I wanted to do it 10 years ago, but the money just wasn’t there,” Peoples said.
The new space will allow her to offer seating, which isn’t available in her current location, a drink menu of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and milk, as well as whole cakes and desserts like cupcakes, brownies, cookies, turnovers and cinnamon rolls.
